International Projects

Pune, India Project

The Rotary Club of Tiburon Sunset has dedicated some of its time and resources to create a school for street children in Pune, India. The children are from India's poorer classes, and through the program they are able to receive access to books, education and a consistent meal. The program is run in conjunction with the Harbour Society, and also involves a micro lending program that enables women to startup businesses. Recently, a matching funds grant, allowed 50 women to acquire their own sewing machines and to work as seamstresses, thereby earning income and greatly helping their families. Many positive results have come from the Rotary Club of Tiburon Sunset's participation in Pune, India, such as the donation of hundreds of pairs of eyeglasses for reading, and a greatly increased literacy rate among over 200 disadvantaged children.

Polio Plus Project

Rotary International has been incredibly active in pursuing the eradication of Polio in the world. In conjunction with numerous organizations including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the US Centers for Disease Control, and many foreign governments, Rotary International has been an integral part of reducing polio transmission levels to the lowest ever recorded. The Rotary Club of Tiburon Sunset has made strong contributions to this meaningful endeavor to eradicate polio from the face of the globe.

In underdeveloped countries polio victims are referred to as "crawlers" because they cannot afford wheelchairs.

Rotary International is currently raising $100,000,000 world wide to match a $100,000,000 challenge grant from the Gates Foundation to eradicate polio.

Smallpox was eradicated in 1979.  How soon will polio be eradicated?

Global Book Exchange

The Global Book Exchange is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that promotes literacy both locally and worldwide – while providing an environmentally excellent place for schools and libraries to bring their unneeded books. Through partnerships with Rotary, the organization ships books to children in developing countries, with shipments to over 45 countries – representing over 1 million textbooks and library books – since the project was founded by volunteer Director Marilyn Nemzer in 1987.

Recently, we helped to pack close to 100 boxes of books destined for a library in Lebanon in cooperation with the Libraries for Peace Project. Over the last two years alone, the Rotary Club of Tiburon Sunset has co-sponsored Book Exchange shipments to the Philippines, Fiji, Gaza, Cambodia, South Africa and Liberia and has helped serve over 100 Marin schools, community centers, community clinics and programs for youth at risk. During the coming school year, sponsorship funds donated by the Rotary Club of Tiburon Sunset will provide extra resources to teachers and students in some Marin’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods and will also continue to give support to upcoming international shipments.

The Global Book Exchange mission aligns itself with Rotary International’s goals related to literacy, the environment and service above self.
